About

Jen is a Writer, Teacher, Performer and Presenter from London.

She has been writing and performing since 2016 when she took her sketch group to Edinburgh for a full run in 2016.

After writing an article about her mixed Indian heritage for Galdem.com she wrote her first solo character show ‘Girl in da Corner’ which was inspired by the wide recognition and positive responses to the article. Soho Theatre supported her for her Edinburgh run of ‘Girl in Da Corner’ after joining ‘Soho Theatre Young Company’ for their Edinburgh Lab in 2017. The show then transferred to Soho Theatre for their ‘Soho Rising’ festival.

Shortly after this Jen was cast in her first professional acting role as ‘Jill’ in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ at the Oxford Playhouse. She then went on to be confirmed as a cast member for a political feminist hidden camera sketch show called ‘RIOT GIRLS’ for Channel 4. Gary Reich, director of ‘Brown Eyed Boy’ and political activist Grace Campbell, conceived RIOT GIRLS. The show aired during Channel 4’s ‘Genderquake’ season.

Other performing credits include BBC 3’s ‘Blindboy Understroys the World’, host of ‘The Comeback’ for BBC Radio 1 where Jen interviews comedians and personalities such as: London Hughes, Jamali Maddix, Amelia Dimoldenberg, acting on BBC Radio 4 and performing her own set at the BBC Asian Network comedy showcase, which aired on BBC iplayer. She has also presented on many different platforms ands recently presented three episodes of ‘Puffin Virtually Live’ for Puffin books for their Christmas edition, World Book Day and Empathy Day.

Jen has now turned her hand back to focussing on writing. Her pitch for a TV short was chosen from 200 entries to be made this year by Studio 71 for CBBC. The piece is a monologue called ‘The Main Part’ inspired by her own teenage experiences with tokenism. She has also recently had some sketches commissioned for the next series of Horrible Histories for CBBC.

Jen is passionate about writing for young audiences. She feels that children need to see themselves in books and the stories they are reading. Her own experience as a primary school teacher has allowed her to see how the lack of representation and diverse voices in books can lead to children feeling like they are not seen which in turn, effects how they write their own stories. She wants to provide humorous, modern narratives, with heart and soul that help children to accept themselves and make sense of their emotions.

Girl In Da Corner was Jen Wakefield’s debut one-woman character show, in which she explored various parts of herself, her experience and some of the widely shared symptoms of a mixed-race background.

Not only did she grapple with the ‘identity crisis’, she took Grime to hard to reach areas of the U.K as her flagship character Natasha G-Storm Flex. Natasha recounted experiences of her ‘Grime Outreach Programme’whilst bringing the high energy beats and bars in three original grime songs written and rapped by Jen herself.
