About

Jen is a Comedian, Writer, Performer and Presenter from London.

She has been performing since 2016 when she took her sketch duo ‘Jiggle and Hyde’ with her sketch partner to Edinburgh for a full run at the fringe as well as featuring as a comedy extra in ‘Beasts: Mr Edinburgh’ at the Pleasance Dome.

After writing an article about her heritage for Gal-dem.com, she wrote her first solo character show ‘Girl in da Corner’ which was inspired by the wide recognition and responses to the article. Soho Theatre supported her for her Edinburgh run of ‘Girl in Da Corner’ after joining ‘Soho Theatre Young Company’ for their Edinburgh Lab in 2017. The show then transferred to Soho Theatre for their ‘Soho Rising’ festival in November 2017.

Shortly after this Jen was cast in her first professional acting role by Steve Marmion as ‘Jill’ in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ at the Oxford Playhouse. She then returned to London in January 2018 to be confirmed as a cast member for a political feminist hidden camera sketch show called ‘RIOT GIRLS’. Gary Reich, director of ‘Brown Eyed Boy’ and political activist Grace Campbell, conceived RIOT GIRLS. The show saw Jen, Grace, Cam and Sophie prank members of the public with feminist issues at the heart of the stunts. The show aired during Channel 4’s ‘Genderquake’ season.

Jen also filmed another hidden camera comedy sketch for BBC 3’s ‘Blindboy Understroys the World’ produced by Rumpus media and fronted by Blindboy from ‘The Rubberbandits’. She went undercover meeting proposers looking for sex in return for rent. The show aired in November 2018. Jen will also appear in the full series due to air in late Spring 2019.

Aside from acting, Jen is also a comedian. Jen performs stand-up, character and rap in her sets, and finished her second solo Edinburgh run in 2018 by performing her own set at the BBC Asian Network comedy showcase, which aired on BBC iplayer in September 2018.

She has also presented on many different platforms. Starting on community radio, she has trained and worked at Westside Radio, Hoxton radio, Watford’s Vibe107.6fm and more recently hosted six podcasts called ‘The Comeback’ for BBC Radio 1. In ‘The Comeback’ Jen interviews comedians and personalities such as: London Hughes, Jamali Maddix, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Tolani T, Sophie Duker, Olga Koch, Lauren Pattison, Adam Hess, Birthday Girls, Chris Washington and Sarah Keyworth. She has appeared on a host of YouTube platform including her own channel “Jendubble’ where she created her own ‘Top 10’s for life’ and recently presented an episode of ‘Puffin Virtually Live’ for Puffin books for their Christmas edition online.

Girl In Da Corner was Jen Wakefield’s debut one-woman character show, in which she explored various parts of herself, her experience and some of the widely shared symptoms of a mixed-race background.

Not only did she grapple with the ‘identity crisis’, she took Grime to hard to reach areas of the U.K as her flagship character Natasha G-Storm Flex. Natasha recounted experiences of her ‘Grime Outreach Programme’whilst bringing the high energy beats and bars in three original grime songs written and rapped by Jen herself.
